Licensing

This page is a plain-language summary of how content on BehavioralStrategy.com can be used. It is not legal advice.

Overview

Behavioral Strategy is meant to be an open discipline (publish the core ideas; invite critique; improve via field evidence). We also publish branded playbooks, templates, and specifications that may be used in commercial contexts only with explicit permission.

Unless a page explicitly states otherwise, the written content on this site is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial–ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY‑NC‑SA 4.0).

1) What you can do (non-commercial)

Under CC BY‑NC‑SA 4.0 you can:

  • ✅ Read, learn, and share for non-commercial purposes
  • ✅ Quote short excerpts with attribution and a link back
  • ✅ Adapt for teaching and academic research (non-commercial) with attribution, and share adaptations under the same license

2) What requires permission (commercial)

You need explicit written permission to do things like:

  • ❌ Use substantial portions of site content in commercial products or services
  • ❌ Republish or resell the content (including behind a paywall)
  • ❌ Use the templates/playbooks/specifications as part of paid training, consulting deliverables, or a commercial toolkit
  • ❌ Imply endorsement or partnership

If you are unsure whether your use is commercial, contact us before publishing.

3) Open discipline vs. branded materials

To reduce confusion:

Open discipline (ideas)

  • You can use the ideas (e.g., “behavior as the unit,” Four‑Fit gating, evidence discipline) in your work.
  • Copyright restricts copying the expression (text, diagrams, templates), not the underlying concepts.

Branded materials (expressions / implementations)

Some materials are intentionally branded so readers can refer to a shared canon (and so we can maintain quality and consistency). Examples:

  • Canonical playbooks, scorecards, and templates (as published here)
  • Computational specifications and example implementations (as published here)

Commercial reuse of these materials requires permission.
